I’ve always wondered about these type of scams. Are they trying to take your car without paying, scam you out of some money with bullshit fees, or just steal you identity/passwords?

The first seems pretty improbable, and they would have to find a real sucker in the second scenario.

Probably the latter two. I was selling a high-end camera body some months back and the scam messages rolled in. I’d reply with things like, “and let me know when Elvis gets here.” That’s a line from the movie Coneheads, by the way. But even the Elvis reference is lost on the foreigners who are trying to do the scam.

My sister-in-law works as a clerk at a police station in a small city and there are scam victims who come in every week.

Yeah it’s a shame. My grandmother just fell for a classic email phishing scam where she ended up giving them her credit card number.

I always like to go with “what part of TN are you in? Oh really? I’m actually heading down there next week I can drive the car down to you myself and we can make the transaction in cash! wouldn’t that be great! Save you a fortune on shipping costs.”

If they keep insisting on using their “agent” or “shipping company” ask them for the name and keep them going about how you cant find their info online, are they on facebook? yelp? etc.

Ask about the weather and start talking about how it compares to yours. Basically troll the shit out of them

Once the car thing gets old, tell them they’ve been added to the free cat facts of the day line. Then text them cat facts with the following lines underneath:

To continue receiving these facts, just text YES

To unsubscribe, text NO

Then when you receive their NO, say something like, “You have chosen ‘No doubt I want to continue receiving cat facts!’ Your next fact is...”

Drives ‘em crazy.
